It seems that peppery finishes affect different tasters differently. The kindest finish I’d say, would be what I believe you are calling a “spice burn”. Clove-like.

Next up the “burn scale” might be a black peppery finish. Not as sweet, or “spicy” as the clove/spice finish. More, uh, pepper-like. Last is the white pepper finish. There is no pretense of flavor here at all – just fine, prickly heat. Hot!

Now Sue Sea and I actually like a nice chest warming finish, particularly those of the clove/spicy burn and (black) peppery variety.

It is also well to note that chest warming (vs mouth warming) are associated with the more aged rums. I’ve published more about these over at the Rum Project (linked through my name, above) and at the RP Forum.
