I did a bit of research on dark rums last night and it could be interesting. Myers', Coruba (if I can find it!!), Maui, Black Seal, Appleton Extra, Cruzan Blackstrap, and another I'm forgetting...

As for Ginger Beer, I've heard two things: Barrett's, and home-made. I'd have to go with the Barretts first, to see what it's supposed to taste like, before I made a ginger beer by hand. I had a Reed's Ginger Beer last week - don't do it! While it tastes great alone, they add some fruit juices and stuff which does not complement a D&S.

Scott, I'd love to see the results of the comparison you mentioned...I love a good Dark & Stormy, and any recommendations you can make for both the rum and the ginger beer brands is definitely welcome!

I'm hoping that some aging would introduce some complexities by bringing out some flavors in the rum and adding some more from the barrels. They're extremely smooth already, they just need some more tastes underneath.

For the price, they're on the high end of mixing rums in my opinion, but given the smoothness they're on the high end of mixing rums! So yes, I do feel they're worth the price.

The New Orleans rums are on my list, but I know of only one place in the area and I've haven't been down that way in quite some time. Luckily I recorded which store had them, and I'll grab a bottle or two when I make it down again.

Jeff Berry had a fantastic review on these rums, though a close friend tried the black and was, to put it lightly, extremely unimpressed.

Still, for the price they seem well worth merit.

It does sound like they could use a good aging, but oh the wait!

Speaking of young Rums, have you gotten any of the New Orleans stuff? I understand many a barrel was washed away in Katrina, but they're just now coming back to market.
